« cleverly designed niche product at a great price »

I bought this unit to use with a GOgroove FlexPod+ Car Mount System with NEW Signal Intensifying FM Transmitter and Charger for Apple iPhone 4 / iPhone 3G / 3GS / iPod / touch / nano / classic - Hands-Free iPhone Call Capability - DC Grip-Stabilizing Mount Design in my Prius. The older FM transmitter that I had used previously did not work at all with my iPhone 4 (the GOgroove FlexPod+ Car Mount System does work with the iPhone 4, but that is the subject of another review), nor would it charge my iPod nano 4th gen. The dashboard 12v socket is too low for the gooseneck on the GOgroove FlexPod+ Car Mount System, but there is another power socket in the center console, and there are two cup holders at the front of the console. This Cup Holder Power Adapter allowed me to make good use of the center console power outlet and cup holder. The unit fit too loosely for comfort into the cup holder, so I cut some packaging foam (the spongy stuff that protects components in their boxes) and wrapped it around the sides of the adapter for a snug fit. I also secured the base of the unit to the base of the cup holder with super strong double-edged tape (a Home Depot item--it's not going anywhere now!) This arrangement provides added stability to the top-heavy GOgroove FlexPod+ Car Mount System with an iPhone plugged in. I also attached some of the packing foam to the back of the GOgroove FlexPod+ Car Mount System iPhone/iPod-mounting head to prevent it from rattling against the plastic door in my dashboard. I tried it out, and everything works well, both mechanically and electrically.

I first saw this exact same unit in an automotive accessory catalog, but for about twice the price offered at Amazon. So, is it a good deal? You bet!

« Bad product and worst experience »

It is a malfunction item. At first time I tested it my car cigarette lighter went off, and I had to replace a fuse at my dealer's place. I did not realize what caused the fuse problem until I was on highway and tried a second time to use this product. My cigarette lighter died immediately. Without power my GPS worked only shortly. I had to use paper map to find my way to my destine. This is worse than to have something not working only.

Have used this every day for 2 years now, including 2 motorhome trips to UK. Have used it to run or charge most everything inluding a 100watt inverter for my wife's waterpik in the rented motorhomes and my GPS at home and travelling. With the correct cord (not just any usb cord works) I've been able to charge my Flip UltraHD video camera while travelling. Highly recommended.

My BMW has terrible cup holders. In fact, they are a total joke for practical use. But this adapter has made one of them incredibly useful!

In my situation, one lighter outlet is used for a bluetooth headset dock, and one USB port is used for a short USB cable to charge my phone. FYI, using a USB cable instead of a large coiled car charger makes for a much more efficient use of space. So now I have an additional USB outlet and lighter outlet available for when my wife needs to simultaneously charge her phone, or my son wants to plug in his portable gaming device.

My only complaint is that the wire is surprisingly long. IMO, they could have slightly increased the height of the housing in order to allow for a retractable cable. But it's not a terrible pain to hide the wire.

I'll make this short and to the point.
I've had the item for about two weeks
and it preforms flawlessly. Love the
convenience of charging my phone, or
anything that charges with a USB port,
as well as doubling the standard car
electricity plug-in. Best product out
there for its intended use.
