« Great item!! »
I purchased this item for my infant daughter. She is one of those long skinny babies and none of the other life jackets i tried on her fit her safely and comfortably. This one is great. It adjusted to fit her and she loves wearing it in the pool. It stays where it belongs instead of riding up around her ears.

« Be sure to check the type! »
I have not bought this item, but I did notice that this vest is a type 3, most other vests on Amazon are type 2. I can't find type 1 (for an infant). Anyway, check out the American Academy of Pediatrics at [...] to find out what you need.

Parents should choose from the following personal flotation devices (PFDs) approved by the US Coast Guard. Child PFD approvals are based on the child's weight. Check the user weight on the label.

LIFE JACKETS

TYPE 1: This jacket floats the best. It is designed to turn most people who are unconscious in the water from the face-down position to an upright and slightly backward position. This jacket helps the person to stay in that position for a long time. It is to be used in open water and oceans. It is available in only 2 sizes: 1 size for adults more than 90 pounds and 1 size for children less than 90 pounds.

TYPE 2: This jacket can turn a person upright and slightly backward but not as much as the Type 1 jacket. It may not always help an unconscious person to float face up. It is comfortable and comes in many sizes for children.

TYPE 3: This jacket is designed for conscious users in calm, inland water. It is very comfortable and comes in many styles. This life jacket is often used for water sports and should be used only when it is expected that the rescue can be done quickly.

LIFE PRESERVERS

TYPE 4: A life preserver is a cushion or ring and is not worn. It is designed to be used in two ways. It can be grasped and held until the person is rescued, or it can be thrown to someone in the water until he or she is rescued. It is not a toy and should only be used in a rescue situation. Check the label on the life preserver to be sure it meets US Coast Guard or state regulations.

Use only life jackets and life preservers that are tested by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and approved by the US Coast Guard. If they are, they will have a label that says so. Life jackets and life preservers are labeled by type (1, 2, 3, or 4) and for whom they are designed (child or adult).

« Improvement over other Infant PFD »
Why would you pay $50 for the Stohlquist Nemo Infant PFD when you can buy a perfectly safe Stearns Infant PFD for less than half the price?

You wouldn't! You'd buy the cheaper PFD first. That's what we did. However, our baby looked highly uncomfortable in the Stearns, and started crying. This PFD, unlike the aforementioned one:

-is sleeker and with a softer foam interior (the other has hard, stiff, very thick styrofoam inside so that the baby looks about as comfortable as he would if strapped to a canoe paddle)
-has a second collar in front of the larger behind-head floating device that fits softly around the back of the baby's neck, cushioning and cradling it from behind (the other only has the big rectangular float thing for the baby's head to lean against, no cushioning or support)
-has beads across the pull-handle for ease if you had to pull the baby out of the water that way (the other just has a strap)

Both PFDs have the required leg strap for safety. Both meet all safety standards of the Powers that Be. So I'd recommend trying the cheaper PFD first, if you think your baby might be of the nature to accept wearing it. Otherwise, save yourself the potential for a sad baby in the boat (who wants to go out in a boat with a sad baby?) or the cost of return shipping (that's what I have to pay) and get the Nemo from the start.

« Great looking, but. »
We ordered the Shohlquist Nemo PFD for our granddaughter. I liked the movement afforded by the vee neck. After trying it on her it was obvious that she actually enjoyed wearing it and did not want to take it off even though we were no where near a boat at the time. However, and perhaps I should have noticed this in the pictures, but I did not, I was troubled by the fact that there is no strap across the zipper. The lack of this strap, which on closer research seemed to be on all other child PFDs, would allow for two possibilities. First the child could very easily pull the zipper down, or, in an accident, the zipper may well catch on something and be pulled down. Either case would leave the PFD worthless and it may well go floating off without the child in it. After realizing that, I returned the PFD and ordered, from Amazon a MTI Child PFD. Too bad, because in all other aspects the Stohlquist seemed to be a quality product. The MTI PFD is much the same in design but does have, what I consider to be, the missing strap.

« Great Product »
The fit is great and she seems very comfortable in it. Much better than the other infant life jacket that my family has.
