« Just started using it today, but it looks like it will be perfect »
I am using a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD on Time Warner Cable. I read a review or two before I got it that suggested there were problems using that cable box. I plugged it into the box using the included eSATA cable. The 1TB drive merged with the 160GB internal drive of the cable box. Before I installed the external drive the DVR was close to 90% full. After plugging in the external drive it showed that it was 11% full.

I will update the review if I have any problems, but so far it works exactly as you would want it to if you want to expand the amount of recording space on that DVR, which was the reason I purchased it.

« Western Digital 1 TB DVR Expander »
After returning an Iomega DVR Expander to Amazon (did not work), I am fairly happy with the Western Digital unit. It took 3 attempts to install before I got the Format screen, but after formatting the new capacity showed up. I have a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 8240HDC DVR. My only complaints are that on Playback the video freezes up for about 4-5 seconds periodically (maybe 2-3 times during a 1 hour show) and every time I power up the DVR I get a message on the screen saying the Expansion Drive is attached (not a real problem because I can just accept the message.

« Versatile hard drive at a decent price »
I'm mostly happy with this Western Digital external hard drive. I've been using it for the last few weeks with my PC, my Tivo, and my PlayStation 3. In two out of three cases, it's all aces. It excels as a media drive or extender for TiVo and PlayStation 3. You simply plug in the device and it's ready to go. It's fantastic for watching media files (with Fat32 limitations) on the PS3. Having more room on your TiVo is always a good thing.

As a PC drive, it's good but not great. There are much faster drives available for less than this one. What you're getting here is the versatility of having USB 2.0 and eSATA connections. For most users, this is a great product at a decent price. Just don't expect it to blow you away for PC backups and storage.

    « Very satisfied »
I have a DirecTV HR20 DVR and was frustrated by the limited storage capacity now that the majority of what my family records is HD.

I saw the info on the DirecTV web site that listed four "recommended" external drives to add storage, but warning that it is not officially supported. I read other customer reviews and liked the 1 TB Western Digital drive listed on the DirecTV site. However, I saw on Amazon that this newer model was available which also included USB in addition to eSATA. I planned to use eSATA, but liked the fact the Western Digital site specifically listed this new drive as compatible with the HR20.

I ordered it and followed the simple installation instructions on the DirecTV website. As it notes there, this drive serves as a replacement so you will not be able to play programs that were recorded on the internal hard drive once you connect the external one.

The installation went smooth with no issues whatsoever. I did it an hour before going to bed because the 14 day program guide has to download. Within the first hour I could select some programs to record overnight and by the next morning the full program guide was available.

Its been two days since I installed it and I've had no problems. I've recorded, watched and erased numerous programs, but I currently have about 14 hours of HD and 13 hours of SD shows recorded and it says 93% free. MUCH better than with the internal drive.

Now that I've done it, I wish I would have bought an external drive sooner.

PS: I saw feedback from some reviewers of the older model who had problems with the supplied eSATA cable that were resolved by using a third-party cable. This new drive comes with both a USB and eSATA cable. I used the eSATA cable and its working fine.

« Does not work with SA 8300HD DVR »
The drive and case themselves are very quiet and sleek. Connection to my SA 8300HD DVR is via eSATA. The DVR recognized the drive immediately and the formatting took a couple of minutes. Everything seemed to be fine. Went to playback some HD shows and got the all-to-common audio/video glitches. Very frustrating considering that the internal drive in the DVR is only a 5400 RPM ATA device (which is way slower than the external drive). Completely disconnected the external drive and recorded a few more HD shows. Playback was as expected with NO audio/video glitches. Just for sanity's sake, I tried the external drive once more. It still came up with the glitches again every few minutes. Based upon a number of other reviews from other technical sites, I conclude that it probably has to do with the way Time Warner does their Mystro software. Sadly, the device is being returned.
